She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.

As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's...
(Goodreads Synopsis)

This was a very enjoyable read. The first few pages are a tad confusing, but within a couple of chapters the storyline becomes clear and the opening makes sense. One of the things I liked about this book was the clever juxtaposition of current events with those that led up to Nikki's disappearance. This was done seamlessly and it had an almost filmic quality with the past events working like flashbacks in an art house film.

Nikki is a strong, well-written character and one the reader can feel immediate empathy for. Cole and Jack also come across well and I found it refreshing that the heroine was drawn to the decent Jack rather than the 'bad boy' Cole - that makes a nice change from much of the current YA literature.

Another major strength of this book is its great premise and the way it connects to mythology of the Underworld. I love mythology and folklore and it's great to see those stories being reused and brought to a wider audience.

This is a story that was well paced, well told and well written. I raced through it in one sitting and I can think of fewer more enjoyable ways to pass a couple of hours. I will certainly be keen to read any future releases by this author, including the second Everneath book when that comes out.

  4. I found this book at Goodreads and although Christmas got in the way of my finishing it - it was good enough that I intend to get back to it this week. I agree with you that it was a bit confusing at the beginning but it still held my (limited) attention enough that I kept reading and it all came together very well.
