End of Year Book Survey 2012

This is my first year joining in the survey, so here goes....

Best In Books 2012

1. Best Book You Read In 2012?

Hard to pick just one, so here's a small selection of my faves in no particular order:

The Mad Scientist's Daughter by Cassandra Rose Clarke
Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor
1Q84 by Haruki Murakami
Shadow of the Night by Deborah Harkness
Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel
White Horse by Alex Adams
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

The Bellweather Revivals by Benjamin Wood. I still enjoyed this book, but not as much as I had anticipated.

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2012?

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I wasn't sure what to expect and it really blew me away.

4. Book you recommended to people most in 2012?

The ones I really pushed to friends and family this year were:

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel
Vampire Empire Trilogy by Clay & Susan Griffith
All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness

5. Best series you discovered in 2012?

Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor
Game of Thrones by George R R Martin

6. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2012?

Laini Taylor
Jasper Fforde
George R R Martin

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

Well, I actually read a few more crime/thrillers this year than usual, some of which were very good, others only average.

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2012?

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel

9. Book You Read In 2012 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year:

I'd love to reread the Vampire Empire Trilogy if I get chance.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2012?

The covers of the Vampire Empire Trilogy are all stunning. Here's the one from the last book in the series:

11. Most memorable character in 2012?

Probably Greyfriar from the Vampire Empire Trilogy.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2012?

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2012?

I would say 1Q84 by Haruki Marukami. It's the one that made me think the most.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2012 to finally read?

Well, I only got around to reading the Game of Thrones books and the Hunger Games books this year.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2012?

Any section of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - it was beautiful prose.

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2012?

The Game of Thrones  books were all pretty long, as was 1Q84. But then I also read several indie-published novellas. So I read books from as little as 80 pages, but to around 1000 pages. But the average was probably 300-400 pages.

17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It?

Definitely the Vampire Empire books. I kept wanting to tell  my husband about it everytime an amazing scene happened.

18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2012

Adele and Greyfriar in the Vampire Empire books.

19. Favorite Book You Read in 2012 From An Author You Read Previously

Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel. I love her writing.

Looking Ahead…

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2012 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2013?

Well, I've been wanting to reread some classics that I haven't picked up in 10-15 years and never seem to get to. So that might be my goal for 2013.

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2013?

The final Sookie Stackhouse novel by Charlaine Harris

3. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2013?

Continue to meet new bloggers and readers, make new friends and share the love of books. I also hope to fit in more time for my own writing again as I've lagged behind this year since starting my new job in April.

  1. I really liked The Night Circus as well. It's not really the sort of book I usually read but there was just something magical about it.

Glad to have found your blog.
