Interview with Nicki Markus

Nicki sent along some questions she would like answers to. Here are my answers.

Tell us about your new release. What inspired the story etc? 
Waiting for Patrick is a ghost story with a twist. I guess it was inspired by the local architecture. I live in the South, and there’s plenty of old plantation house seemingly everywhere you look. My daughter and I were wondering if any of them have ever been reported as being haunted. I kind of made up answers to a “what if” story from there, with my daughter’s questions inspiring more and more detail.

Do you have a favourite character or moment, and why? 
My favorite character is probably Sheri, Elliot’s outspoken, longtime friend. There’s one moment in the story where she leaves him a snarky note. It’s so totally Sheri, but touching in its own way.

Tell us a little bit about your writing process. 
I sit in my overstuffed recliner, with my cat and my Cheese Puffs, and let the muse take the story where she will. I don’t tend to plan out every detail, and I definitely don’t write out an outline, but I usually have a general idea of where the story is going and of the characters involved, before I ever start writing.

What are your favourite genres to read, and who are your favourite authors? 
I love Science Fiction, Fantasy, Paranormal. Pretty much anything, though. My favorite authors of all time are Isaac Asimov and Anne McCaffrey.

If you could travel back in time, which period would you visit and who would you like to meet? 
For the purposes of this book, it would have been nice to travel back to the Civil War era. It would have saved me a lot of research. But overall, I would love to meet some of the famous women in history. Go back and fly with Amelia Earhart. Go on field trips with Jane Goodall. Look over the creative shoulder of Gloria Steinem, Georgia O’Keefe, or Harriet Beecher Stowe. Sit beside Rosa Parks, hold the hand of Anne Frank. So many places and people to see.

What's one book you wish you'd written? 
To Kill a Mockingbird. I love that book.

Describe your writing style in three words. 
Informal, Conversational, Character-centered.

Tell us a little-known fact about yourself. 
I used to participate in dog agility. I had three rescue dogs who loved the sport, and my daughters and I went to a bunch of agility trials. Never won much of anything. But had a great time.

What are you working on next? 
I’ve currently got five different stories started, so I’m alternating. The one that’s currently in the forefront is a story about a single father of an adopted boy with Autism. So, not paranormal. (Although my other book about an Autistic boy is paranormal, because he’s an empath. So go figure.)

Elliot tries to convince Ben that Patrick isn’t coming back, but Ben’s devotion is about to change not only his lonely existence, but Elliot’s life as well.

About the Author
Brynn has always loved to write about strong male characters and their close friendships. When she found the world of m/m fiction, she fell in love. Finally, a way to bring those strong male characters together and let those emotional connections spill over into deeper relationships. Sometimes her characters go through the emotional wringer, but they always have each other.
Brynn lives in Virginia near her two grown daughters who support her writing and sometimes act as proof readers. Both of her daughters are also aspiring writers and hopefully it'll just be a matter of time before they have their own author's biography.
Brynn was a teacher by profession for thirty years. She worked in special education with children with emotional disabilities. She has recently changed careers and is now working as a mental health counselor to this same population and their families. When she is not working or writing, she loves to draw and paint. She also gets outside as often as she can, reads anything that doesn't move out of the way, and is always looking for her next story.
