Historical/Drama

A young Englishman plots revenge against his mysterious, beautiful cousin, believing that she murdered his guardian. But his feelings become complicated as he finds himself falling under the beguiling spell of her charms. (IMDB Synopsis)

In my teens I read a number of Du Maurier's works; however, I may have missed this one as the story wasn't instantly familiar to me. Nevertheless, the film sucked me in from the start and kept me eager to see what would happen until the very end. Rachel Weisz gives a captivating performance in the title role, one that keeps the audience guessing her motives along with the characters on screen. Meanwhile, Sam Claflin came across well, keeping a good balance to show his character's naïvety without making him look a simpleton. Beautifully shot, My Cousin Rachel should appeal to fans of dark romance and mystery as well as the usual period drama lovers. 4.5 stars
