Author Interview3 + Giveaway - Angel Martinez

Today I welcome Angel Martinez to the blog to answer a few questions for Interview³.

Angel Martinez Author Interview³

1) Tell us 3 fun facts about your writing history
•    I started writing novels as bedtime stories for my son – as chapter a night serials
•    My first published work was a science fiction chap book that the publisher had illustrated. The illustrations were, shall we say, not the best.
•    All of my original publishers have closed. I did start to wonder if it was me…

2) Describe your writing style in 3 words
•    Imaginative (we'll use that instead of weird)
•    Irreverent (often)
•    Eclectic (since I'm out of "I" words)

3) Name 3 of your literary influences
•    Ursula LeGuin
•    C.J. Cherryh
•    Tanya Huff

4) Share your 3 favourite books
(Sharing these with the understanding that these are three of my favorites. To pick absolute favorites is impossible.)
•    This Alien Shore by C.S. Friedman
•    A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula LeGuin
•    Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie

5) What are your 3 essential writing tools?
•    PC (I am nothing without my computer)
•    Hardbound notebooks (where I keep the story notes)
•    Pens (for dashing off notes wherever/whenever

6) Where are your 3 favourite places to write?
I'll have to go with dream places since I really only write in my study:
•    A nice coffee shop within walking distance
•    A vast and extensive Beauty and the Beast style library, except with connectivity
•    An isolated beach environment with a comfortable chaise and a huge sunshade.

7) Name 3 items on your writing wish list
•    To have more than one title at Dreamspinner
•    To have more of the catalog on audio
•    To finish all the sequels that need to be written (this would require that I not start a new series in the meantime. Ahem.)

8) What are your top 3 tips for aspiring writers?
•    Don't write in a vacuum.
•    Don't be afraid of learning your craft. Don't ever stop learning.
•    Don't expect to be successful out of the gate.

9) Tell us 3 of your writing plans for the year ahead
•    Finishing the 6 Offbeat Crimes series books I promised – currently 5 is in edits and 6 is a little more than a chapter in
•    Finishing the 5th Brandywine Investigations novel – currently about 2/3 there
•    Hoping to get a new Brimstone in before the end of the year

10) Tell us about your latest release
The latest release was Feral Dust Bunnies: Offbeat Crimes 4 back on June 20. Offbeat Crimes is a paranormal humor series about a special police unit in Philadelphia—the officers all have some paranormal connection but their abilities are all broken in some way.
Feral Dust Bunnies is about Officer Alex Wolf, who actually is a wolf cursed to live in human form. He's been human for many years now but still has trouble "humaning" and has some issues understanding the workings of human relationships sometimes. Oh. And there's a kitten. Let's not forget the kitten.

Officer Alex Wolf responds to a lot of ‘paranormal’ calls that aren’t. Exotic pet birds aren’t monsters and unusual dog breeds aren’t aliens. It’s a good thing he likes the Animal Control officers, but he both yearns for and dreads those calls where he runs into ACO Jason Shen. Jason’s scent is so delicious that Wolf has a difficult time humaning around him.

Animal Control calls take a disturbing turn, though, when Wolf and his lizard-man partner, Krisk, discover the impossibly mummified bodies of rats and an unfortunate mother cat. The rescue of the cat’s sole surviving kitten not only gives Wolf more time with Jason, which is both perplexing and wonderful, but also leads to dangerous discoveries. Something inconceivable stalks the city and its officers of the law. Wolf has to figure out what it is before it can attack and drain the life from the people and the kitten he loves.

About the Author
The unlikely black sheep of an ivory tower intellectual family, Angel Martinez has managed to make her way through life reasonably unscathed. Despite a wildly misspent youth, she snagged a degree in English Lit, married once and did it right the first time, (same husband for almost twenty-eight years) gave birth to one amazing son, (now all grown up) and realized at some point that she could get paid for writing.

Published since 2006, Angel's cynical heart cloaks a desperate romantic. You'll find drama and humor given equal weight in her writing and don't expect sad endings. Life is sad enough.
She currently lives in Delaware in a drinking town with a college problem and writes Science Fiction and Fantasy centered around gay heroes.
