Weekend Blog Hops - 4 May 2018

It's the weekend once more. That means it's time for my book blogger hopping....

Do you ever feel like you have emerged better for reading a book?
Yes, there have been plenty of books that have had a positive effect on me. Perhaps I was down, and a book made me laugh and perked me up. Or another may have made me rethink my approach to some aspect of my life. Reading can definitely be beneficial in that way.

Opening sentence:
I am extremely concerned, my dearest friend, for the disturbances that have happened in your family.

From page 56:
It is easy to see that if I do not break it off, Mr Lovelace's advantages by reason of my unhappy situation will every day increase, and I shall be more and more entangled.

My Current Read
Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady
Samuel Richardson

Defying her parents’ desire for her to marry a loathsome man for his wealth, the virtuous Clarissa escapes into the dangerous arms of the charming rogue Lovelace, whose intentions are much less than honorable. This thought-provoking work, written entirely in intimate letters, exposes the delicacy and complexity of affairs of the human heart. The fatal attraction between villain and victim builds and unfolds into a relationship that haunts the imagination as fully as that of Romeo and Juliet or Tristan and Isolde.

  1. Epistolary novels can be quite a challenge, because it is hard to convey action and emotion is a realistic way. Hope the author met the challenge.

  5. I completely agree with your answer to this week's Book Blogger Hop. Books have the power to better us as people, even if it's just in small ways that could potentially go overlooked. Some novels have the power to make us rethink our life choices, whilst others can just make us better people by making us laugh.

I definitely think books are very powerful in that regard.

Feel free to check out my Book Blogger Hop answer if you wish!

  7. Do you think you would have made the same decisions as Clarissa? (I know this might be a hard question without spoilers).

  9. I have two authors I turn to when I'm in need of feeling better: E.B. White and Bill Bryson. They never fail me and are totally different in how they lift my spirits. I just joined the hop and answered this question. www.cleemckenziebooks.com
