Weekend Blog Hops - 15 June 2018

It's the weekend once more. That means it's time for my book blogger hopping...

You have just won a $100.00 Visa gift card. Will you spend the entire amount on a rare collector's edition you have always wanted, or buy several newly-published books? Explain your choice.

I would go with the collector's edition. Why? Once upon a time, I wanted the DVD of a Czech musical I loved. It was pricey, though, so I kept putting off getting it. One day, I finally had the money, only to find it was no longer available for sale anywhere. I had missed my opportunity. If I didn't buy the collector's edition, I'd worry I wouldn't be able to find a copy again in the future, whereas I could be confident that the newly published books would be around and easy to find for a while.

Dust and ashes though I am, I sleep the sleep of angels.

From page 56:
The dean is a man who's outgrown his own shoes and is feeling the pinch. We've no bishop, no archdeacon, not for now, and he finds himself, bewilderingly, at the top of the heap.

My Current Read
The Western Wind
Samantha Harvey

It's 1491. In the small village of Oakham, its wealthiest and most industrious resident, Tom Newman, is swept away by the river during the early hours of Shrove Saturday. Was it murder, suicide, or an accident? Narrated from the perspective of local priest John Reve--patient shepherd to his wayward flock--a shadowy portrait of the community comes to light through its residents' tortured revelations. As some of their darkest secrets are revealed, the intrigue of the unexplained death ripples through the congregation. But will Reve, a man with secrets of his own, discover what happened to Newman? And what will happen if he can't?

  5. Sounds like an interesting book but not really the kind of thing I read. I hope you enjoy it. This week I have Girl With a Gun by Kari Bovee - a historical mystery from my review stack. Happy reading!

  6. I like the idea of a priest as the narrator. It seems like a good mystery.

  9. Well, it turns out that only three of the BBH participants this week opted to get the collector's edition! Yeah, it was you, me, and Jo from Jo's Book Blog! Everyone else went for the newbies! Lol.

I TOTALLY agree with you that, if you don't get a collector's edition when you first come across it, you may never be able to get it. Of course, there are collector's editions that we will NEVER be able to get, just because they are really beyond our reach. But if a book lover wins a $100.00 gift card, they can certainly get a collectible volume. If nothing else, they can buy 3 or 4 Barnes & Noble Collectible Editions, which are usually around $20.00 each, and use the balance on the tax. Right? Lol.

Thanks for sharing! Thanks as well for commenting on my own BBH post!! Have a nice Sunday!! <3 <3 :) :)

    1. Absolutely. I've learnt my lesson. If there's something I desperately want, so long as I'm not bankrupting myself, I have to get it when I see it. Thanks for stopping by.

  10. I really like your answer - I didn't consider it in that sense. I definitely see the appeal in wanting to own a special collector's edition of a book or series that you really adore, so I completely understand where you're coming from. There's something special about being able to own a collector's edition that can't be matched by another feeling, and I like how you've used past experience to answer the question too.

Personally, I don't think there's a book or series I like enough to want to own a collector's edition of, so I'd spend the money on a range of new books to experience. However, that might change quite quickly in the future if there's a book I like enough! You never know.

    Thanks for sharing!

Feel free to check out my own answer if you wish!
