Weekend Blog Hops - 12 July 2019

It's the weekend once more. That means it's time for my book-blogger hopping.

What do you like/dislike about self-published works?
I like the fact you can read diverse stories of the kind that might not be picked up by publishers because they are too niche.
I dislike when it's clear the author hasn't had the work properly edited and it's riddled with typos and grammar/punctuation errors, or erroneous information.

Opening sentence:
Dima heard the barn doors slam before anyone else did.

From page 56:
Nikolai leapt for his guns, ready to seize the opportunity she'd offered, but before he could even aim, the dragon released a deafening roar.
My Current Read
King of Scars
Leigh Bardugo

Nikolai Lantsov has always had a gift for the impossible. No one knows what he endured in his country’s bloody civil war—and he intends to keep it that way.

Now, as enemies gather at his weakened borders, the young king must find a way to refill Ravka’s coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army.

Yet with every day a dark magic within him grows stronger, threatening to destroy all he has built.

With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha Squaller, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him. He will risk everything to save his country and himself. But some secrets aren’t meant to stay buried—and some wounds aren’t meant to heal.

  1. I haven't read that many books by Leigh Bardugo, but I've heard a lot of good things about King of Scars. It seems interesting, and I like the quotes.

    1. I'm loving it, but you will need to read all the other books in the series first for it to make sense.

    1. I do recommend them. I have just binged all seven of her Grishaverse novels in the last few weeks and am now a complete fan!

    1. Hmm. There is a dragon in it (shapeshifter), but that's not the main focus. It's an extension of the Grishaverse novels.

    1. Yes, you will need to have read the Shadow and Bone trilogy and, if possible, the Six of Crows duology before this one for everything to make sense.

  6. I also have trouble whenever the self-published work has grammatical errors and that distracts me from the story a bit.

  7. My answer for BBH was very similar! Great question :) I love giving self publishing a chance, but I certainly get a bit burnt out if I read ones back to back that have a ton of typos!
