Weekend Blog Hops - 19 July 2019

It's the weekend once more. That means it's time for my book-blogger hopping.

If you were to write your own autobiography, what would the title be?
Maybe A Tale of Two Hemispheres, since I was born in the UK but now live in Australia.

Opening sentence:
When Geza Uirmeny decided to take his own life, he turned to a blade.

From page 56:
No one expected to find any bodies, much less royalty.
My Current Read
The Secret Life of Bones
Brian Switek

Bone is a marvel, an adaptable and resilient building material developed over 500 million years of evolutionary history. It has manifested itself in wings, sails, horns, armour, and an even greater array of appendages since the time of its origin. In dinosaur fossils, skeletons are biological time capsules that tell us of lives we'll never see in the flesh. Inherited from a common fishy ancestor, it is the stuff that binds all of us vertebrates together into one great family. Swim, slither, stomp, fly, dig, run - all are expressions of what bones make possible. But that's hardly all.

In
The Secret Life of Bones, Brian Switek frames the history of our species through the importance of bone from instruments and jewellery, to objects of worship and conquest from the origins of religion through the genesis of science and up through this very day. While bone itself can reveal our individual stories, the truth very much depends on who's telling it. Our skeletons are as embedded in our culture as they are in our bodies.

Switek, an enthusiastic osteological raconteur, cuts through biology, history, and culture to understand the meaning of what's inside us and what our bones tell us about who we are, where we came from and the legacies we leave behind.

  1. What a dismal first line. But I guess it fits with the title. My Friday Quotes

Graphic and sad beginning but it pulled me right in. Happy weekend!

  4. That would be a great book. I always wondered how people who used to call Dec, Jan and Feb a winter get along with calling those months summer)))

    1. It is a pain, especially at Xmas. You just can't sing about snow in the same way when it's around 40oC!!

  6. I like the play on the title, clever, A Tale Of Two Hemispheres sound perfect, Nicki. I drew a blank when writing my response to what my autobiography should be called and used an old picture meme to help although I wish I'd lied and put down "French Kissing, Vampires and Other Reasons I'm Banned From The Library" as my title!

Here's my BBH post so you can see my real answer. ;-)

Have a great weekend and I hope you enjoy your reads.
