Weekend Blog Hops - 9 August 2019

Hi all! Sorry I missed last week. Things were manic. But I am happy to be back with you all again this weekend.

What authors do you always read and recommend?
This is one of those questions where the answer can change depending on my current faves. Naturally, I always recommend 'classic' authors, but if you ask me on more modern works, I would choose at present: Halldór Laxness, Haruki Murakami, V. E. Schwab and Leigh Bardugo (to give you a mix of styles and genres).

A rival of mine once complained that my stories begin awkwardly and end untidily.

From page 56:
Paama continued to stare at Ansige's retreating back. Behind her, half-hidden in the dust of the court, lay her discarded wedding ring.
My Current Read
Redemption in Indigo
Karen Lord

Paama's husband is a fool and a glutton. Bad enough that he followed her to her parents' home in the village of Makendha, now he's disgraced himself by murdering livestock and stealing corn. When Paama leaves him for good, she attracts the attention of the undying ones – the djombi – who present her with a gift: the Chaos Stick, which allows her to manipulate the subtle forces of the world.

Unfortunately, not all the djombi are happy about this gift: the Indigo Lord believes this power should be his and his alone, and he sets about trying to persuade Paama to return the Chaos Stick.

Chaos is about to reign supreme...

  2. I am interested in the setting for your current book. Is it set in Africa someplace? My Friday quotes for PATRON SAINTS OF NOTHING

    1. The folklore the story is based on is Sengalese, so West African.

  7. I love that no matter what genre you want to read or what tropes you're looking for, there will be an author out there that's created a story that'll fit the bill; there's a book your there for everyone. ;-)
I hope you enjoy your weekend, Nicki. Here's my BBH Post

  8. One of these days I'll get over my intimidation of Haruki Murakami. I have several of his books sitting on my TBR shelf, and so I do plan to read his work. It's a start. :-)

I also want to give V. E. Schwab a try. And I enjoyed the one Leigh Bardugo book I listened to. I definitely want to read more of her work.

I read another of Lord's books recently and had trouble getting into it. I am undecided if I want to try her earlier work. I had such high hopes. I am glad you enjoyed Redemption in Indigo.

Have a great week, Nicki, and happy reading!
