Author Interview3: Kari Trenten

Today I welcome Kari Trenten to the blog to answer a few questions for Author Interview³.

1) Tell us 3 fun facts about your writing history
I started because an intense love of story. It wasn’t enough to just to read and enthuse over stories. I wanted to create my own. Take my first release, Fairest. This came from years of loving fairy tales, the whole concept of the magic mirror, and the words, “Who is the fairest of them all?” I wished to delve deeper into the meaning of those words. I also felt the essential conflict of that particular legend was between the princess and the wicked queen. How interesting would it be if the prince were removed and all of the passion remained to bubble between the two of them? What if there was more than two of them, but an actual cycle of sorrow and broken hearts involved in the sleeping curse and the question, “Who is the fairest of them all?” From such thoughts my first published work was born. :)

2) Describe your writing style in 3 words  
Ambient speculative fantasy.

3) Name 3 of your literary influences
Storm Constantine, Neil Gaiman, and Algernon Blackwood.

4) Share your 3 favourite books  
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, Sign of the Sacred by Storm Constantine, and Ink and Steel by Elizabeth Bear

5) What are your 3 essential writing tools?
A notebook, a mechanical pencil, and my laptop.

6) Where are your 3 favourite places to write?
The kitchen table at home when the morning light is just right, my office, and/or in a cafe.

7) Name 3 items on your writing wish list
Poetry, self-published ambient fantasy novels, and historical-mythical fiction cross-overs.

8) What are your top 3 tips for aspiring writers?
Never give up, keep writing, and come up with tricks or treats to keep the learning process fun.

9) Tell us 3 of your writing plans for the year ahead
Self-publishing my Tales of the Navel: The Shadow Forest novels.

10) Tell us about your latest release
A Symposium in Space is both an homage and a comeback to Plato’s Symposium. Never have I fallen so madly in love with a book, yet been so insulted at the same time. In this novella, the discussion on love continues in a matriarchal future where the guests literally end up eating their own words. You don’t need to have read Plato’s classic to enjoy it, but I’m really hoping someone who has read it will pick it. It would be awesome if someone enjoyed the Easter Egg references/jokes I’ve placed in the text. :)
