Weekend Blog Hops - 13 September 2019

Hi all! It's time for those weekend blog hops once again!

Have you ever read a library book you loved so much, you just HAD to own it, so you bought a copy for yourself after returning the library book you had already finished?
In short, yes. I do use the library as a way to try books that interest me but on which I don't feel certain enough to spend money. Notably, I started reading works by V. E. Schwab and Leigh Bardugo from the library, but now I am gradually buying them all for my bookshelves, because I loved them so much. Similarly, I have started learning Japanese and have borrowed a few grammar books from the library, to see which I find best before I buy.

Opening sentence:
The child is dead. There is nothing left to know.

From page 56:
On the rug, Smoke Girl was shaking out of her own shape. Moaning, her face solid as skin, then fading to smoke, about to vanish.

My Current Read
Black Leopard, Red Wolf
Marlon James

In the first novel in Marlon James's Dark Star trilogy, myth, fantasy, and history come together to explore what happens when a mercenary is hired to find a missing child.

Tracker is known far and wide for his skills as a hunter: "He has a nose," people say. Engaged to track down a mysterious boy who disappeared three years earlier, Tracker breaks his own rule of always working alone when he finds himself part of a group that comes together to search for the boy. The band is a hodgepodge, full of unusual characters with secrets of their own, including a shape-shifting man-animal known as Leopard.

    1. Some are, yes. Not all. There are also many creatures from African mythology. It's not scary. More fantasy with a darker edge.

  4. I'm ashamed to say that I can’t remember the last time I actually visited my local library to borrow a book (I've been for art exhibitions I the upstairs gallery and used the reference books in the non-lending section). 😦 They just didn’t hold any books in my favourite genre; paranormal romance. Then I got my Kindle and haven’t looked back.

I hope you enjoy your weekend, Nicki. Here's my BBH Post

    1. I had the same issue with the library not having the books I wanted, but then they created a network that spans the whole of SA, so you can view the catalogues from all libraries and if another branch has a book you want, they ship it to your usual branch so you can borrow it, and then you can return it to any branch too and they send it back where it belongs. So now there is far more choice!
