Excerpt - Heaven 2.0 by Scott Haworth

Today I welcome author Scott Haworth to the blog. Scott is here to share any excerpt from his latest release, Heaven 2.0, so without further ado....

Having been born in the 28th century, Mike Kepler never believed in the existence of Heaven or Hell. The myths of the old faiths had been abandoned and replaced with the teachings of The Church many centuries earlier. The young physicist is shocked to learn that there is an afterlife when he is recruited by the Taipei Corporation. It was created by a team of scientists rather than God.

Mike’s job is to travel to the past and save people at the time of their deaths using advanced medical technology. The individuals are then brought back to the 28th century, judged on the sins they committed and sentenced to an eternity in the artificial Heaven or Hell. Mike quickly learns that the project is far less noble than it appears. He discovers that many of the people sentenced to eternal torment in Hell do not deserve their fate.

“You’ll get a much more detailed explanation in your orientation class once we get back to my time.  Are you ready to go?  Would you like a few minutes alone?” he concluded while motioning towards Brett’s dummy body.
Brett briefly glanced back at the corpse.  “Nah, I’m ready.  So how do you bring me back?  Is it like the transporters on Star Trek?  You break down my molecules, ship me off somewhere really fast and then reassemble me?”
“Of course not,” Mike answered with mild horror.  “That would kill you.”
            “It would?”
“Your body being ripped apart at a molecular level?  Yeah, you’d be quite dead.  How we actually transport you is very complicated.  It has a lot to do with quantum physics.”
“That show with Scott Bakula?” Brett questioned.
Mike brought his PDA up and did a quick keyword search.  “No, that was Quantum Leap.  Quantum physics is a branch of science that the great thinkers of your time are only beginning to understand.  In the future we have the ability to manipulate time and space in ways you couldn’t possibly imagine.”
“Uh, huh.  So you have no idea how it works do you?”
“I do so!” Mike answered defensively.  He closed his eyes briefly and forced himself to ignore the slight insult to his ego.  His job was too important to let personal feelings get in the way.  Brett’s smooth and comfortable transition was the only thing that mattered.  “Your body will remain intact during the transport.  In fact, transport is probably not the best word to use to describe it.  You won’t actually go from one place to another.  The space and time that you occupy will change to the Taipei Corporation facility approximately 750 years from now.”
“Okay…” Brett said in a way that made it clear he had no idea what Mike was talking about.
“I know it’s hard to understand right now,” Mike said as he raised his PDA to eye level.  “If you can just trust me I promise it will all be explained to you once we get to my time.”
Brett had not really been scared since the start of the encounter.  The young man was acting too genuine and honest to be hiding anything.  He took one last look around the golf course, which was still frozen in time, for nostalgia purposes.  When he was finished he nodded his head towards Mike and grabbed the young man’s hand.
“What are you doing?” Mike asked suspiciously as he looked down at their interconnected hands.
“Don’t we have to be touching for you to take me to the future?”
“No,” Mike said as he waved his PDA around with his free hand.  “You’re programmed in separately.”
“Oh,” Brett responded in embarrassment.  “So this is just awkward then, huh?”
            “Yup.”
Mike smiled uncomfortably as Brett let go of his hand.  He tapped the appropriate buttons on his PDA and found himself in the booth of extraction room A-17.  He immediately turned to Brett to see how the man would react.
Brett tensed up briefly and blinked his eyes rapidly at the sudden change of scenery.  He reached for the wooden door’s knob but his hand froze a few inches from its objective.  He shot an inquisitive look at Mike.  After receiving a nod of approval, Brett cautiously swung open the door.

Author Bio

I graduated from The Ohio State University in 2004 with a degree in history and political science. Six months later I decided I wanted to be a writer, which made the degree largely worthless. By my estimate, I will need to sell another 13653 ebooks to pay off my student loans. So... if you could recommend me to your friends that'd be super.

I have written six novels in genres ranging from science fiction to political satire. I tried combining the two genres once, but I didn't think anyone would care about a sex scandel involving the President of Blargon 7.

When not writing, I enjoy being asleep.

I currently live in central Ohio, or as you might know it better as, "that state I fly over on my way to a state I care about."
