Gone five. He didn’t have long. Panic broke his concentration. He cursed and squeezed his eyes shut. Images flashed through his mind. Too fast. He couldn’t pick one, couldn’t focus. It had started so well, but then his eyes had strayed to the clock. He needed to finish before quarter past. He’d been so close a moment ago. Before that glance. There. No. If he could just....
The sound of the key in the lock. The squeak as the front door opened.
“Billy, I’m home.”
Defeated, he adjusted his jocks, pulled up his jeans, and went to greet his mother.
