Reading Recs: Nine Classics You Can Read in One Day

In today's infographic, I am highlight nine short classic novels and novellas. Forget slogging through War and Peace. If your reading time is limited, these are quick tales you could conceivably finish in a day or two.

Sample the first-ever Gothic novel in Walpole's Castle of Ortranto.

Discover the origins of the term 'masochism' in Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Furs.

Take another dip into the world of Gothic Romance with Radcliffe's  A Sicilian Romance.

Sympathise with the melancholy hero of Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther.

Take a trip into the wild with Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

Or contemplate human nature in Stevenson's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Party like it's the 1920s with Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.

Sell your soul for beauty like the titular character in Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Or take a trip to the seedier side of Georgian England with Cleland's Fanny Hill.

As a side note, Venus in Furs and Fanny Hill are more suitable for adults, so perhaps give those a miss if you are a younger reader, and come back to them in a few years' time.
