What if the Port Mafia’s Hellhound, Ryuunosuke Akutagawa, had joined the Armed Detective Agency? Likewise, what if Atsushi Nakajima belonged to the Port Mafia? In the parallel world of Bungo Stray Dogs: Beast, fledgling detective Akutagawa’s desperate mission to rescue his younger sister from the Port Mafia’s clutches brings him face-to-face with the organization’s fearsome White Reaper...a.k.a. Atsushi Nakajima. What does fate have in store for the two beasts in this alternate tale of darkness versus light...?

The sixth Bungo Stray Dogs light novel, Beast, was originally written as a freebie for early viewers of the Dead Apple movie. It imagines a parallel world in which Atsushi and Akutagawa have taken opposite roles, and on the whole it does so very successfully. I was fascinated to see how each of the characters would adapt to their new positions and I enjoyed seeing them interact with each other and with characters with whom they would normally be at odds. This will surely please any Bungo Stray Dogs fans, but if you are new to the series, I don't recommend it as the best place to start as, to fully appreciate it, you need to be versed in the 'real world' situations of these characters first.
