Two inseparable friends move to Kyoto to chase their dreams of becoming maiko, but decide to pursue different passions while living under the same roof. (Synopsis)
The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House was a sweet, understated drama about two friends who move to Kyoto in their teens to train to become maiko. However, for one, those dreams change when she fails her training but finds another role within the household that suits her better: that of cook. As well as being a pleasing drama about friendship and finding your passions in life, the series also offered a rich cultural snapshot of life for those living as maiko and geiko in modern-day Kyoto. It gets four stars from me.
