Theatre Review: Miss Saigon

Miss Saigon
4 January 2024
Festival Theatre
Adelaide
Musical

This was not my first time seeing Miss Saigon. I have previously seen professional productions three times in London, plus an amateur production here in Adelaide. Overall, this production was enjoyable. The set looked good and the cast all gave fine performances. The only slight complaint on that front was that the orchestra was occasionally a bit too loud. I knew the lyrics, but my mother-in-law was seeing the show for the first time and sometimes couldn't make out what they were singing. Some lyrics have been altered too. I assume this was for political correctness in most cases (and perhaps happened prior to this production), but the changes irked me as they destroyed rhymes and the text didn't flow as well. I also wondered why the Engineer deserved higher billing than the actors playing Kim and Chris, as I've never seen that happen before. But, despite these minor grievances, it was an excellent performance and we all had a good night out. I am giving it 4.5 stars.
