On a visit to Yar-del with Grand Master Heminaltose to celebrate his age of majority birthday, Farrell catches the eye of Lieutenant Cameron, a handsome young officer in the Queen’s Guard. But having spent most of his life cooped up at Heminaltose’s school for wizards, Farrell is clueless as to palace intrigue. He is unaware that his access to the queen is something others would greatly prize. When the queen points out that his suitor is the son of a social climbing minor noble, Farrell must decide whether to heed the warning or meet with Cameron anyway. (Goodreads Synopsis)

First Love is a great short story from Andrew Q. Gordon which acts as a prequel for his Champion of the Gods fantasy M/M series.

Although chronologically first, I actually wish I'd read this after Book One in the series. The reason for that is the fact this tale introduces characters who have died or are otherwise gone by the time the events of Book One take place and I had gotten invested in the characters in this short story, and was therefore sad to find them missing in the first main book.

But that aside, this is an engaging tale and helps to illuminate Farrell's background and some of the events that lead to the main storyline of the series.

In a war that shook the earth, the Six gods of Nendor defeated their brother Neldin, god of evil. For the three thousand years since, Nendor and the Seven Kingdoms have known peace and prosperity.

But then a new wizard unleashes the power of Neldin. Meglar, wizard king of Zargon, uses dark magic to create an army of creatures to carry out his master's will.

One by one, the sovereign realms fall. Soon the only wizard who can stop Meglar is Grand Master Farrell, the Prince of Haven, the hidden home of refugees. An untried wizard, Farrell carries a secret that could hold the key to defeating Meglar—or it could destroy the world.

While helping Nerti, queen of the unicorns, Farrell saves Miceral, an immortal muchari warrior the Six have chosen to be Farrell's mate. But Farrell approaches love with caution, and before he can decide how to proceed, Meglar invades a neighboring kingdom. Farrell and Miceral find themselves in the middle of the battle. Farrell pushes himself to the limit as he and Miceral fight not only to stop Meglar but for their very survival.

The Last Grand Master is an enjoyable M/M fantasy with excellent characterisation and world-building. The story moves at a good pace and is engaging throughout with well-written prose.

In the early chapters, I found myself a little distracted as there was much talk of the imminent threat, and yet the characters still had time for romantic interludes. But that was my only one minor complaint, and once the story got going, I was completely hooked.

I very much look forward to seeing where the story will go in Book Two.
