Weekend Blog Hops: 22 September 2017
In regards to Banned Books Week (www.bannedbooksweek.org/), what are your favourite books that have been banned or challenged?
Wow, so many from which to pick! The ones that come immediately to mind would be: The 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Opening sentence:
I am a cat. As yet, I have no name.
From page 56:
I'm not denying that Kosuke wanted to take me for the sake of their friendship. But I wouldn't let him deny, either, that taking me, with my resemblance to Hachi, would have something to do with ghosts of the past.
My Current Read
The Travelling Cat Chronicles
Hiro Arikawa
Nana, a cat, is devoted to Satoru, his owner. So when Satoru decides to go on a roadtrip one day to find him a new home, Nana is perplexed. They visit Satoru's old friends from his school days and early youth. His friends may have untidy emotional lives but they are all animal lovers, and they also wonder why Satoru is trying to give his beloved cat away. Until the day Nana suddenly understands a long-held secret about his much-loved owner, and his heart begins to break. Narrated in turns by Nana and by his owner, this funny, uplifting, heartrending story of a cat is nothing if not profoundly human.

Hi Nicki!
ReplyDeleteSuch a different book to what I would normally read, but I have to say I am really intrigued and think I'd enjoy this.
Thanks for sharing!

The Taste of Blue Light - it's a like a young adult's version of The Bell Jar!

:)
Thanks for the visit. The book is certainly unique, but I'm enjoying it.
DeleteThe 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade... I'm not surprised that was on a banned book list when compared to some lol.
ReplyDeleteYep, so many potential complaints! :)
DeleteI'm drawn to your current read--I want to know more about the cat and his owner.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the tale so far. I should finish it today or tomorrow.
DeleteSounds like a fun read. Love that opening line! Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit. Happy Hopping!
DeleteOh wow, The Traveling Cat Chronicles sounds interesting. The first line hooked me at least.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend. - Katie
Thanks Katie. You too!
DeleteSounds like an interesting story but not like one I would usually choose. I am not a fan of talking animals. I am featuring The Hunt by Chloe Neill this week. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting as the cat doesn't talk per se--only in his head to himself.
DeleteI'd give this book a try. Like Kathy, I'm not drawn to books that feature talking animals, but I'm intrigued by the owner's long-held secret.
ReplyDeleteMy Friday post features Half Broke Horses.
The cat isn't talking to the humans; we only hear his thoughts as the story unfolds from his pov.
DeleteI don't know those banned books you named.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Happy Hopping!!

Hi Elizabeth. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI like the sound of The Travelling Cat Chronicles. Despite my blog and nicknames, I don't read a lot of books featuring cats--or with them as narrator's, but it's not for lack of interest. I will be curious to knwo what you think of it when you are done! I may have to read it too. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing some of your favorite banned books! I've only seen the movie version of American Psycho. I'm afraid I ended up abandoning the book. But just because a book might not have been for me, I don't think it should be banned.
I hope you have a great weekend, Nicki!
Thanks for the visit. I should have a review of that book up either tomorrow or Monday, so keep an eye out. I am enjoying it so far.
DeleteI haven't read American Psycho or Brave New World, but those sound really interesting!

DeleteSounds like a cute story. Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

DeleteAny book by the Marquis de Sade has no business being in a school library, whether middle-school or high school! This is a no-brainer.
ReplyDeleteSome people get upset about books being banned, as if it were the GOVERNMENT trying to ban books for ADULTS. This is definitely something to be up in arms about! I will staunchly defend your right to read the Marquis de Sade, even if I would not read it myself. I will just as staunchly defend the rights of those parents that insist his books be banned from school libraries.
Those parents who want to allow their kids to read ANY type of book out there (including de Sade and the Fifty Shades books), can simply take them to the public library, where ALL types of books are freely available.
I LOVE the book you're reading! Even though I'm not a cat lover (my favorite animals are horses), I would definitely enjoy reading this book! Heck, it reminds me of "Black Beauty", in the sense that it's narrated by an animal -- although in "The Traveling Cat Chronicles", there's human narration alternating with the animal narration. Sounds like an ENCHANTING book!!
Thanks for sharing! Also, thanks for always commenting on my BBH post!! <3 :)
Hi Maria
DeleteOh, I agree. Although I enjoy reading the Marquis de Sade myself, I certainly don't think it's suitable for a school library.
What a strange, but kind of intriguing sounding kind of book. Hope you enjoyed your weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alicia; I did.
DeleteGreat list Nicki I always wanted to try and read American Psycho by Bret Easton because I love the movie, but I don't think I am ready to read it yet. lol Thank you so much for stopping by my blog hop from last week Nicki.
