When the crown prince is killed, his twin sister assumes the throne while trying to keep her identity and affection for her first love a royal secret. (Netflix Synopsis)

The King's Affection is an entertaining Joseon-era historical romance. Naturally it's pretty trope-filled, but it handles those tropes well and has fun with them. As with all K-dramas, there is a good blend of humour, action and emotion, so you can be laughing at one moment in an episode and crying the next. In this series, there are a few lulls here and there, and I think 18 episodes would have been plenty and would have tightened up the pacing, but that is a minor complaint, as it was otherwise enjoyable, with fun, memorable characters and moments, stunning visuals, good acting, and a few twists along the way. If you like historical romance and romance with mistaken gender-identity, this series is sure to please. It gets 4.5 stars from me.
